Kindergarten and 1st grade celebrated Dr. Seuss's birthday with The Cat in the Hat!  The students had a Seuss-tastic time listening to the story read aloud by one of the most famous Seuss characters.  

2nd Grade Word Surgery

2nd grade turned into a Hospital and all of the students became surgeons!  The students put words into surgery and put them back together as contractions. 

West DeFuniak students took part in ReadQuest, a nationwide reading event on Friday, February 26, 2016. They joined more than 12,000 educators and tens of thousands of students in Renaissance Learning’s annual one-day reading celebration that encouraged K–12 students to read and share their discoveries. 3,763,408 books were read nationwide!  

Students read books, nonfiction articles, and took Accelerated Reader comprehension quizzes on what they had read to contribute to the national reading effort. On the ReadQuest website, students were able to see their quizzes count toward the national books-read ticker, the top books and articles read in each state, prize winners, and user-submitted posts, tweets, and photos. 

Approximately 573 students from WDE took part in the shared effort and passed 2,247 quizzes in one day!

Students in Third Grade at West DeFuniak Elementary have been learning about the deadliest animal on Earth, the mosquito.  They had the opportunity to hear from North Walton Mosquito Control on the mosquito’s life cycle, types of mosquitos in our area, ways they prevent illness from spreading, and ways to spot areas where mosquitos can lay their eggs.

West Defuniak Elementary facilitated their own teacher-led professional development on Friday, February 12th. Teachers were able to  choose from a variety of different sessions to attend, based on their needs.  These sessions included teacher collaboration, student engagement, and using technology in the classroom. They also had the opportunity to participate in EdCamp and network with colleagues who had similar interests or concerns.  Teachers left the professional development feeling inspired and truly excited!

Jump Rope for Heart

WDE will be participating in the Jump Rope for Heart fundraiser again this year.  This event will be held during regular PE classes on Tuesday and Wednesday, February 16 and 17.    The collection envelopes, with information included, will be sent home the week prior to the event.  Our goal thisyear is $6000 and donations may be submitted on-line at www.heart.org/jump.  Please help us to reach our goal this year.  Thank you for your support!

Box Tops Deadline

February 12, 2016

Friday, February 12 will be the second deadline for returning box tops.  Classes will be awarded a pizza party on Friday, February 26th for those bringing in the most box tops k-2 and 3-5.  You've already helped us to earn $1000 which will be sued to purchase new books for our libary!

Atlantic Coast Theatre took 5th grade on an art adventure to discover more about the Mysterious Mona Lisa!

“No one knows for certain the identity of the mysterious smiling woman in the world’s most famous painting, but an art student is about to find some clues as she travels back in time in Atlantic Coast Theatre’s original play Mysterious Mona Lisa. Children and families explore the art, science, and music of the original Renaissance Man, Leonardo DiVinci.”

Fifth grade students are learning about Sybil Ludington, a 16 year old girl who risked everything to save the country she loves during the Revolutionary War in 1777.
