Our second-grade meteorologists posed the question: “How can we create weather in the classroom?” Through a STEM “cloud in a jar” experiment, they discovered how clouds form when water vapor condenses around particles in the atmosphere. To mimic nature, students placed warm water in a sealed jar to create the perfect environment for evaporation. By placing ice cubes on the lid, they cooled the rising water vapor, causing it to condense. Finally, they added hairspray to act like atmospheric particles, which allowed the water vapor to condense and form a cloud right inside the jar!
