Mrs. Bowers’ fifth grade students read The Man on the Far Side of the Moon. The reading selection features the life of Astronaut Michael Collins who flew the Apollo 11 landing him and his crewmates Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin on the surface of the Moon. After a close read of this high-interest text, students took part in a 𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗦𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗿, a formal dialogue based on a specific text wherein the discussion leader asks open-ended questions concerning the text. This dialogue boosts cooperative work among the group as students practice asking and responding civilly to intelligent questions about the text.
Socratic Seminar is an 𝗔𝗩𝗜𝗗 strategy that energized Mrs. Bowers’ fifth grade students this week, inspiring them to actively own their learning.
