In Science 5 this week, Mrs. Carnley and Mrs. Garrett’s fifth-grade students explored forms of energy, including mechanical, electrical, chemical, sound, and nuclear. Students used academic language to discuss and determine which category each type of energy represented. Lessons were focused on inquiry, and students engaged in thinking, learning, and discussing. When students inquire, they clarify their own thinking as they work through ambiguity. These lessons also focused on collaboration, in which students used teamwork to share responsibility, ideas, information, and opinions toward the goal of greater learning achievement.
Teachers at West DeFuniak Elementary School use AVID’s learning model WICOR to lead students in comprehending concepts and articulating ideas at complex levels. WICOR is an acronym for Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading.
