Freeport Middle School AVID 7th graders visited the University of West Florida in Pensacola. Mrs. Kendra Peloquin, Mrs. Brenda Farris, and Mr. Steve Wassman led the AVID 7th graders on a college tour to educate them about the many aspects of college life. FMS AVID students visit Northwest Florida State College in 6th grade, UWF Pensacola in 7th grade, and Florida State University in Tallahassee in 8th grade. Submitted by Kendra Peloquin.
Bay Elementary is proud to announce the Kiwanis Students of the Month for January. They are Jacob Oakes and Mallory Murphy. Ms. Susanne Martin, 4th grade teacher, says “both students are resourceful, stay on task, and always follow the rules. They are a great asset to our class.”

Two of the strategies focused on were using the formula (l x w x h) and counting the number of cubic units in one layer and multiplying it by the number of layers (base x height). The class also practiced adding and subtracting hypothetical layers. The kids had so much fun! Submitted by Chelsea Ellison/FB.
5th grade students at WDE explored the nervous system, the digestive system, and the circulatory system during Science Focus Center. They completed experiments investigating these systems. Students examined the nervous system by experimenting with reaction time and things that could impact those times such as lack of sleep, etc. The central nervous system consists of the brain and the spinal cord, and it's purpose is to control all of the body's activities. Then they used ropes across the classroom to compare the length of the large and small intestines. The large and small intestines are part of the digestive system. The students then investigated the circulatory system and learned that blood is made mostly of water, red blood cells carry oxygen, plasma transports nutrients and removes waste, white blood cells fight infections, and platelets control clotting. The students had a great time being able to see these systems in action.

After returning from Winter break, PHS students in grades 6th - 12th had the opportunity to participate in Paxton's AVID committee's first Career Day. Throughout the day, students were able to learn about different careers. Representatives from careers like nurse practicioners, paramedics, law enforcement, and customer service, to name a few, were there to teach the students about their career and answer any questions. Overall, the day was incredibly successful and the students learned a lot.

We are proud to announce that Walton High School was recently recognized as an AVID Highly Certified Site for the 2017-18 school year! This status is awarded to AVID sites that have met the AVID Program Essentials and Data Collections documentation that supports program effectiveness and student progress. This self-study and validation process is designed to assist AVID sites with achieving desired benchmarks that are precursors for academic success in high school and college.

WDE teachers participated in a ClearTouch training on January 3, 2018. Glenn Reichle from ClearTouch showed teachers how to incorporate the new technology into daily lessons. Clear Touch Interactive displays enable both teachers and students to collaborate and design new ways of learning together.
