Walton County School District was well represented at the Emerald Coast Odyssey of the Mind Tournament on February 23 at Shoal River Middle School and Riverside Elementary School in Crestview, Florida. All of our teams did an incredible job!

Walton High School Odyssey of the Mind Team
Odyssey of the Mind is an international educational program that provides creative problem-solving opportunities for students from kindergarten through college. Team members apply their creativity to solve problems that range from building mechanical devices to presenting their own interpretation of literary classics. They then bring their solutions to competition on the local, state, and World level. Thousands of teams from throughout the U.S. and from about 25 other countries participate in the program.
WDE recently celebrated DEAR Day. DEAR stands for “Drop Everything and Read.” It is a time to celebrate student literacy and encourages students and adults to make reading a priority in their lives. This month, first grade students continued the spirit of DEAR Day and made daily reading an important part of their regular schedule. To add to this excitement, students have seen their hard work pay off by finally reaching their AR goal of 30 points and receiving their AR shirt! First graders are excited to continue on with a heart for reading, and look forward to seeing how they can grow throughout the rest of the year! submitted by Jessica Dawkins

4th and 5th grade students at WDE got to experience what it is like to be in an aquifer. They visited the Water Ventures trailer with guides Carly Todd and Julianne Werts. Students learned about Florida’s 900 springs, Florida’s ecosystems, all about the water cycle as well as experiencing hands on activities. Students also learned about water conservation and how they can do their part to help save the Earth’s water supply and protect Florida’s natural resources. Submitted by Jessica Dawkins
MSE 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade parents attended FSA Parent Information Meetings on February 25th and 26th. Guidance Counselor, Lisa Jones, and grade level teachers provided information that enables parents to help their children feel more confident and prepared for the upcoming state assessments. 2nd graders at West DeFuniak Elementary participated in planting potatoes in a grade level garden. The students were able to individually plant their own potatoes. Students learned that potatoes are usually planted first in a spring garden and what the criteria is for planting potatoes. The students had a blast working in the garden and getting a little dirty!
